Any fitness instructors/enthusiasts out there? How can I get toned/built at home without using any equipment?

March 102010

I would like to know what I can do to work out at home without the need for any equipment. Already I do 150 push ups (broken down into 5 reps of 30) and 50 pull ups (10 reps of 5 – finger tip pull ups, done on door frame cos I don’t have a bar) once every two days. The push ups are getting too easy though so I thought of maybe increasing, perhaps to 4 reps of 50. I cycle at least 20 minutes a day, though not at the moment cos my bikes out of action. I am a bloke, I have a very good, healthy diet, with lots of protein etc.

I usually have a cool down day in between, so i alternate between day off and day on. I’ve avoided doing sit ups because I have problems with my back and any kind of repetitive straining motion causes me quite a lot of discomfort. I would like to know if there are any good exercises for building up my abs, and also if there is anyway to build up my pecks more (they’re already quite well toned) at home, and without the need to get some weights.

Also please tell me if you think there are any problems with my regime. Anything I should be doing differently in terms of number of reps, and down days etc. Maybe I should be alternating a day doing exercises for my chest/arms/abs. Perhaps there is a certain technique to these exercises which I haven’t mastered?

Any advice on any of these areas would be hugely appreciated, I’m not trying to look like super man, just want to be able to look after myself.

Thanks guys!

Hi :)
i would suggest increasing the intensity/ how hard you push yourself. So if your doing all those push ups etc, are you doing them with lots of effort? It is better to progressively increase your exercise so yes increasing the number you do will help :)

The plank is a good exercise, no equipment needed :) it improves your core musles and abs. you probably know what it is but just incase ;)
Lie on your front on the floor, lift yourself up onto your toes and elbows and keep in that straight position for 30seconds, then increase it to 45 when you get good.
It really does help, i’ve just been doing circuits for GCSE PE and i needed to build my strength for press ups etc and doing the plank each night made the circuits alot easier.

As for not having weights, you could either go the the gym and use their weights, or for a cheaper alternative use bags of sugar or cans, as silly as it sounds im sure it will work :L

I hope that helps a bit..

how much would a high resistance row machine cost?

March 82010

i heard i can get a cheap row machine, for like 160$. but common sense tells me that it won’t be anywhere near gym quality, as i’m pretty sure the row machines at the gym are probably 1,000+. i’m looking for one with some high resistance, and durability. and that’s pretty much it.

so if any body out there knows anything about row machines or home fitness equipment that could help me out, i would appreciate it. thank you if you can.

craig’s list! you might find one for $50 – 200, it depends. also check ebay.

What are some good at-home Fitness DVD’s?

March 82010

I am looking to buy an at home fitness dvd, maybe something like yoga booty ballet. What are some good ones that you know of, and where can i buy them? I don’t have a credit card so I can’t buy them online.

Please tell me what worked for you and where i can get them! thanks! And please none that you have to have a bunch of equipment for.

Need recommendations for fitness equipment: yoga, pilates, stretching?

March 62010

I want to install a small home gym in a 9.5 x 11.5 room (8′ ceiling) on my second floor. The purpose of this is two-fold: I need to lose weight, and I need to regain strength and flexibility.

I was thinking of installing a ballet bar or parallel bars and buying a new or used Total Gym (for pilates).

What do you all think? Anyone have experience with Total Gym? Any recommendations on an alternative piece of equipment?

I recently bought a home gym. It is made by PowerTech and called the ‘workbench’. It is great!! It took a while to setup…the directions weren’t great but the machine is!! I bought it at Dick’s Sporting Goods. 8ft by 11ft. It was $1000 without the weights…so I guess it depends on how serious you are and how much you have to spend.
It would be a lot of money to spend if a month or two from now you aren’t using it much.

Is there a site that shows all the different workouts you can do on a at home gym?

Grip Training for Weightlifting at Home

March 42010

If when working out your hands give up holding the dumbbells before you finished training the muscle you targeted, you need to do something about your grip.

Here is how to train your grip strength and endurance at home without having to buy “squeezers” or any other fitness gadgets. All you need beside your regular workout equipment is just a towel and a couple of rubber bands.

What do you think of advertisements for fitness equipment featuring women?

March 22010

I’m sure you’ve seen them. A treadmill, a stair climber, whatever. And there’s a woman in spandex with her hair in a ponytail but with flawless make-up and not sweating at all.

Using sex to sell? Some of this equipment is bought more by women than men and while I’d like to imagine they’re catering to lesbians and bisexual women, I doubt it. And a lot of men find a woman perspiring to be sexy anyway, judging by a lot of pr0n.

Isn’t the whole point of these products to make you sweat? If you’re not sweating, you aren’t in your target heart rate.

It’s home equipment, so why are they dolled up? Isn’t a selling point that you can wear grungy sweats because you don’t have to go to the fitness center? And wait til your shower to fix your hair?

My suspicion: they want to have women associate the use of the product with the promised result – slim, fit, confident (and confident means not sweating in most situations) even if the actual use of the product is much less "glamorous".

Maybe there’s a bit of our "instant gratification" mindset in going for such ads.

And maybe I am reading this all wrong.

What do you think?

Same reason why advertisements don’t show a woman shaving her hairy legs when they are trying to sell razors or shaving cream. It’s always a woman shaving her already hairless legs. Or the same reason why models in spanx ads have fit bodies and don’t need body shaping hosiery for "support". Showing reality doesn’t always sell products. (Infomercials and "before and after" advertisements can be an exception, but normally people don’t want to be presented with realism when they are being targeted for advertising.) I don’t think many people want to see a sweaty fat man with armpit stains when they are buying exercise machines.

What CHEAP fitness equipment do you recommend?

February 282010

I asked this question 2 days ago and got "answers" that didn’t truly answer my question.

I am looking to convert our garage into a "home gym". I have some home fitness tools like resistance bands, fitness dvds(my husband has a tv out there to watch football) and yoga mat. What inexpensive gear/tools should I add?

I have a bike I ride around to do my errands so please don’t tell me to get a stationary bike or a treadmill. I’d like real recommendations that wouldn’t cost me an arm and a leg. A home gym is to save us money verses a health club membership.
My husband has a weight bench and free weights out there. I do know how to use them. As far as my goals- I’m looking to mix things up from my cycling/power walking routine.

I would start by looking on a site like craigslist.com. I think a lot of people buy equipment with a goal in mind and then give up so you could probably get some used equipment in really good shape at a cheap price.

As far as what you need to buy….. i guess it depends on your fitness goals. Do you want to bulk up, tone, strenghten? But you probably want a good mix of some cardio and weights.
