Free weights, an aerobics step, or an aerobic ball (whatever those big balls are called) would be a good start if you want cheaper, but eventually you would need to buy more expensive equipment like the leg press, or home gym stations
References :
I would start by looking on a site like craigslist.com. I think a lot of people buy equipment with a goal in mind and then give up so you could probably get some used equipment in really good shape at a cheap price.

As far as what you need to buy..... i guess it depends on your fitness goals. Do you want to bulk up, tone, strenghten? But you probably want a good mix of some cardio and weights.
References :
yoga ball! its more effective doing situps on a yoga ball than on the floor. Also when you watch tv, sit and balance on the yoga ball instead of lounging on the couch (it helps you're back and lose calories watching tv). It's easy as that, and probably no more than $10.

good luck.
